Lesson 1a Advanced Challenge:
World Book Kids- Under Science projects, breathing rate may be a good project.  Most of my students are in high school.
World Book Students- Behind the headlines would be a good way to start the day.  I find most of my students do not know what is going on in the world.
World Book Advanced-Anderson's Fairy Tales.  You can print, save, email, and have text read aloud.  You can also translate for ELL students.  I tried the read aloud.
World book Discover-Liked the visual encyclopedia.  Went to human being, anatomy, which can be used by my students.  Liked the how to do research.

Lesson 1b Advanced Challenge
World Book Online Kids- Most of my students are older but would serve ELL students.
Word Book Online InfoFinder- Science projects would be good for an integrated class with vocation and education.
World Book Online Reference Center- The read aloud and translate would be of use for my ELL students.

Lesson 1c Advanced Challenge
I typed in the term "dog" and information on Elvis Presley and The Everly Brothers came up.  Must have something to do with song lyrics.  That search did not work for me.  I then went to the browse feature and found a picture of a dog and got more information on dogs.  I would use the browse because I do not know Spanish.  This must be confusing for English Language Learners.

Lesson 10-Wrap Up

I know I will use many of the resources but I liked Learning express and I will use this often for my students an myself.  I think there are resources here to help my students pass their state test and find employment.  I also enjoyed Ancestry Library and I think it is important for everyone to knoe where they came from.

I know I will use the resources that read aloud and translate for my student that need it.  This was a very helpful and entertaining experience.

Heritage Quest, Sanborn Maps

4.  Went to books the people and searched Basil Claymore.  Found the "History of Sully County.  In PERSI found a periodical with Basil Clement Claymore biographical notes 1824-1910 from South Dakota History dated 2007 Vol 37 Iss 2.  I will have to get a copy and research this further.

5.  In Sanborn Maps I looked at Rapid City and on the corner of 6th and Main is a building that was called the International Hotel that is the Alex Johnson Hotel now.  This map was from 1885.  This will be fun to look at more to see how the city has grown and evolved.

Lesson 9-History and Genealogy Resources-Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Sanborn Maps

1.  I put in my current name in Ancestry Library and found no matches.  Found more records under maiden name.  Found a record from 1992 in Sioux Falls, right address but wrong birth date.  Also had a list of old addresses.  In 2002 it had my address and I could look up all my neighbors.
2.  Found grandparents on father's side.  Most of these records were from Social Security Death records. Also found records on my father and brother, and Aunts marriage certificate.  Searched Basil Claymore and found him listed in Indian Census Rolls, Civil War Pension Index.  Most data was from the National Archives.gov.
3.  In photos and maps I found links to yearbook indexes, Library of Congress, land ownership maps, and US and World Atlas.  Could not find the yearbook from my college.  This will fun to see if I can find family in old yearbooks.

Part 2 Camio

1.  Searched Paul Revere and found that he worked with silver.  There was a Tea Urn, Tea Service, Sugar Bowl, spoon.  Then I realized where the name Revere ware came from.  It is amazing how things you use on a daily basis come from something in history and art.
2.  Searched Sioux and found a lot of art by George Catlin.  He depicted the history of the Sioux and the west in painting much like we do with photos now.
3.  Looked at Vincent van Gogh and found many paintings.  I liked the fact that you could enlarge and get the detail.  I always liked his bedroom painting and have been working on my own.  Maybe I can finish it now that I can get more detail.
4.  Added van Gogh's paintings to favorites and did a slide show and created a web page.  This would be great for presentations.  The web page for Camio was a little hard to read.

Lesson 8-ArchiveGrid and Camio

Part 1
1. Typed in "Sitting Bull autograph card" and found out he was known as Tatanka Iyotake, he was a shaman, leader of the Hunpapa Sioux, and did not like the white men moving in.  He led the battle of Little Bighorn then want to Canada.  He toured with Buffalo Bill and was killed resisting arrest for practicing the "ghost dance".
2.  I searched my Great Grandfather Basil Clement (Claymore) and found reference to the Claymore Ranch and an excerpt from a book where he is explaining the whereabouts of Jim Bridger.  This book available at the Houghton Library at Harvard.  My family has done extensive family history research and I was actually finding some new research.  Basil Clement was French and was an interpreter for the Calvary and the Sioux, he also trapped with Jim Bridger.  I should be able to find much more.  Wish I would have had access to the resources back when I was doing this project.

Lesson 7- WordCat and More FirstSearch Indexes

Part 1
1. I went to Advanced Search and chose title phrase in the menu, checked books and searched for "Angels & Demons".  2.  I found 183 records and 1655 libraries had #1.  Clicking the link took me Augustana College Library.  3. Class descriptor PS3552.R685434, Author is Dan Brown and other books were "The Da Vinci Code" and "The Lost Symbol".  Under subjects was Papacy and Vatican City.  Fiction under Papacy was "Death of a Pope" and under Vatican City was "Day of Confession".  This tool would be great for finding books a your local library.
2. I searched in OAIster and went to subject phrase and chose "Observations on Bats at Badlands National Park, South Dakota.  Clicking the link next to Access took me to a US Geological Survey abstract of the survey of bats at badlands.  In the left column I discovered a link to the USGS home.  I could get maps, photos, and publications here.  Chose another link and I was at the University of Nebraska Lincoln site.  I believe the author of "bats" was from here.  I had many discoveries.
